Dental Filling
What is a dental filling?

When the dental caries/decay is in outer layers of teeth that is enamel and dentin and has not yet affected the inner layer that is pulp, then fillings are done in teeth to save them from further decay.

Different filling materials used

Amalgam Restoration(silver filling):

Amalgam is a time tested filling material. It is an alloy of silver, copper, tin with other trace metals which is mixed with the mercury to obtain a packable mass that is filled into the cavity.

Tooth colored composite restorations:

Composite is a resin based plastic type of filling material whose color can be matched perfectly with the tooth color. Once the affected tooth is prepared, the material is placed in layers. We use a special light of a particular wavelength (light cure gun) to ensure the curing (setting) of this filling faster.

Why a composite filling?

These fillings match perfectly with natural tooth color and at the same time are strong enough to bear the masticatory (chewing) forces of posterior teeth. Composites are free of mercury and thereby ensure reduction in mercury related health hazards. The restored tooth is ready for immediate use, that is, the patient can chew the food immediately as the material sets completely while sitting on the dental chair. These fillings are also used for chair side smile designing.

At Bhavnagri dental clinic, we care for your esthetics and mostly use tooth coloured fillings that provide your teeth with a very esthetic natural look as well as good strength. However in few cases (posterior teeth, at angles not visible from outside, very deep cavities etc.) silver filling is sometimes more successful.
